Forest Service Grants Available for Utilizing Woody Biomass from National Forest Lands.  This grant program is intended to help improve forest restoration activities by using and creating markets for small-diameter material and low-value trees removed from forest restoration activities.

US Department of Housing and Urban Development

Youthbuild.  The HUD Youthbuild program provides grants on a competitive basis to non-profit organizations to assist high-risk youth ages 16 to 24 learn housing construction job skills and complete their high school education.  Program participants enhance their skills as they construct and/ or rehabilitate affordable housing for low- and moderate-income persons.

US National Park Service

Save America’s Treasures.  The Federal Save America’s Treasures program is one of the largest and most successful grant programs for the protection of our nation’s endangered and irreplaceable cultural heritage.  Grants are available for preservation and/ or conservation work on nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts and historic structures and sites.  Intellectual and cultural artifacts include artifacts, collections, documents, sculpture, and works of art.  Historic structures and sites include historic districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects.

Arts Challenge Grant (nonprofit arts organizations only).  Provides assistance to South Dakota nonprofits, producing arts institutions and community arts councils.

Arts Opportunity Grant.  Assists nonprofit organizations throughout the year for a variety of activities. Up to $500 in matching funds may be awarded.

Excursion Grant.  Excursion grants of up to $500 assist organizations in the transportation of K-12 students and persons with disabilities to arts events.  To be eligible, trips must be at least 40 miles from the organization’s home.

Importation of Musicians Grant.  Assists South Dakota orchestras with the hiring of musicians from outside their own communities.

Performing Arts Bank Grant.  This is a partnership program of the South Dakotans for the Arts and the South Dakota Arts Council.  As an underwriting service for South Dakota communities with populations under 15,000, the Performing Arts Bank insures against financial loss from producing and sponsoring performances, workshops, and other performing arts events.  Funds are only used if a presenter suffers a deficit at the box office.

Professional Development Grants.  Professional Development Grants may be awarded to an organization to fund its representative's attendance at a professional development activity that benefits both the organization and the individual attending.

Project Grant.  Assists nonprofit organizations present an arts activity for the general public which meets specific needs of the organization.

Small Organization Season Support Grant.  Assists small nonprofit arts organizations present a season of activities that meet the needs of the organization.

Statewide Services Grant.  Funds statewide cultural service organizations through a partnership agreement with the South Dakota Arts Council.  Grants are made to help meet the mission, goals, and strategies of the Council’s long range plan.

Technical Assistance Grant.  Technical Assistance to South Dakota nonprofit arts organizations provides matching funds for specialists to advise groups on technical matters, specific programs, projects, and/ or administrative functions, provided that this expertise is not available within the organization.  Assistance specifically related to technology issues such as use of the internet, web design, and other computer expertise may be funded in this category.

Touring Arts Grant.  Helps make the arts available in all regions of the state by providing matching funds to nonprofit organizations for contracted programs listed in the Touring Arts brochure.

South Dakota Department of Agriculture

Building Our South Dakota Rural Communities Grants (BOSDRC).  BOSDRC provides funds for 4-H clubs and FFA/ FCCLA chapters to conduct community development projects.  Maximum grants awarded on a competitive basis are $750 for the “basic grant” and $200 for the “safety grant.” To be eligible, applicants must be a 4-H Club, a 4-H county organization, an FFA chapter, or a FCCLA chapter.

The Community Forestry Challenge grant program.  This program provides financial assistance to city governments, non-profit groups, state agencies, and tribal groups to establish or maintain a community forestry program and restoration projects.  Funding for this program is provided by the U.S. Forest Service.

Department of Agriculture Cooperative Forestry Programs.  The Department of Agriculture, Resource Conservation and Forestry Division is the delivery mechanism for USDA Forest Service Cooperative Forestry Programs.  These programs include the Forest Stewardship Program through which technical assistance is provided to private landowners to encourage and enable long-term management of their forest and agroforest (windbreak) resources.  The Economic Action Program helps to create and expand natural resource-based businesses, focusing on those which contribute to forest health and resource stewardship.  It also works toward stronger tourism and amenity-based opportunities, overcoming the lack of resources to diversify local economies and implementing forest products technologies to increase commercial use of small diameter and woody biomass.  The 9 Forest Health Program offers technical assistance to diagnose and treat insect, disease, and abiotic problems affecting trees.  Periodically, funds are available in the form of cost-share programs and grants to implement project specific activities that accomplish program goals.

Grant Planning and Writing Technical Assistance.  The South Dakota Department of Agriculture assists in the planning and writing of grants.  This resource is available to small businesses, local governments, producer groups, producers, and anyone with an interest in South Dakota agriculture and rural development.  The department also maintains a comprehensive inventory of funding opportunities.

Rural Development Agriculture Loan Participation Program.  This program works with local lenders to provide low-interest loans for projects which engage in or enhance value-added production, processing, marketing, or exporting of agricultural products.  Projects eligible for this loan participation include those that demonstrate the potential of adding value to, or creating innovative uses for, South Dakota agricultural products.  The program may also be used in developing viable new agricultural products and subsequent markets or enhancing the economic viability of the applicant or the rural community.

Urban and Community Forestry Program.  The Urban and Community Forestry Program provides financial assistance to communities and to volunteer service organizations in the form of cost share enhancement grants.  The grants are used to fund tree planting projects which provide benefits to the general public, solve a specific urban and community forestry problem, demonstrate the importance of trees in our communities, and challenge other organizations to plan and implement similar projects.  The community or service organization must match the grant funds on a 50-50 basis.  Since the program began, grants have averaged between $1,500 and $2,000 per project.  The required match is traditionally met through the volunteer labor and donated supplies that are needed to properly plant, mulch, and otherwise maintain the trees until they are established.

21st Century Learning Centers Grant Application.  This program establishes 21st century Community Learning Centers.  A Community Learning Center is an entity within a public elementary, middle, or secondary school building, or equally accessible and available building, that (1) provides educational, recreational, health, and social service programs for students from high poverty schools and the families of those students within a local community, and (2) is operated by the grantee in conjunction with local governmental agencies, businesses, vocational education programs, institutions of higher education, community colleges, local educational agencies (LEA), and cultural, recreational, and other community and human service entities.

South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks

South Dakota Wildlife Action Plan Competitive Grants.  South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (SDGFP) has set aside a portion of its State Wildlife Grants funds for fish and wildlife conservation proposals from outside the agency.  State Wildlife Grants (SWG) funding is provided annually to states to address the needs of certain animal species and their habitats.  The funding ratio for SWG projects is 50% federal and 50% non-federal.  The purpose of this competitive grant program is to assist in implementing the South Dakota Wildlife Action Plan.

South Dakota Governors Office of Economic Development

Value-Added Tourism Subfund.  The Value-Added Tourism Subfund is earmarked to provide loans specifically for feasibility studies, marketing studies, and marketing of value added tourism projects.  The purpose of the Value Added Tourism Subfund is to attract more visitors to South Dakota from other states and countries, lengthen visitor stays, expand the shoulder season, create jobs, and expand upon the historical, cultural, scenic, wildlife and other resources in South Dakota.  Loans cannot exceed more than 50 percent of the total project costs for marketing, feasibility study expenses, or other eligible project expenses.  Applicant must provide an equity contribution of at least 10 percent of the total project cost for marketing, feasibility study expenses, or other project expenses as determined by the board.

Pay It Forward Foundation.  The Pay It Forward Foundation administers a mini-grant program for Pay It Forward activities designed by and involving youth in service to their school, neighborhood, or the greater community.  Mini-grants of up to $500 are available to schools, churches, and community-based groups of youth for service activities.

Qwest Foundation.  The Qwest Foundation is dedicated to enriching the lives of customers and the communities it serves.  The Foundation awards grants that generate high impact and measurable results through community-based programs, including K-12 education and economic development.  Qwest’s primary geographic area of interest is within a 14-state region that includes Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

Wellmark Foundation.  The Wellmark Foundation is a non-profit foundation that seeks to improve the health of Iowans, South Dakotans, and their communities, and as such funding is limited to Iowa and South Dakota-based projects and organizations.  The Foundation provides support to non-profit organizations and public entities to help local communities establish or expand health initiatives.  Current funding priorities of the Foundation focus on prevention with these two specific areas: 1) childhood obesity prevention and 2) community-based wellness and prevention.
